Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon, east to Alberta, Montana and Idaho.

Habitat: Vernally moist mossy banks and rock crevices.

Flowers: March-June

Description:
General:

Herbaceous perennial from a short rhizome, the simple, single stem 1-2 dm. tall, glandular-pubescent throughout.

Leaves:

Basal leaves 1-3, slender-petiolate, the blade 1.5-2.4 cm. wide and considerably shorter, with rounded lobes; cauline leaves 3-5, the petioles reduced but the stipules enlarged upward.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a few-flowered, few-branched panicle; calyx narrowly bell-shaped, the 5 lobes linear-lanceolate, nearly erect; petals 5, sub-erect, violet, slightly unequal, one often bi-lobed, spatulate to oblanceolate, tapered to a short, broad claw; stamens 5.

Fruits:

Ovary nearly completely inferior; capsule 4-6 mm. long; carpels 2.
